St Gayane

Sardarapat

The Sardarabad Memorial is located 25 kilometers from Echmiadzin. A memorial park was laid out in 1968. The entrance is surrounded by huge winged oxen made of red tuff. A flight of steps leads to a square from which a 26-metre-high bell tower rises. The beautiful trellis structure with its nine bells can be seen from afar. The bells ring every year on the day of the historic victory. A lane of eagles, symbolizing the spirit of the fearless fighting men, leads to a curved Wall of Victory (length – 55 meters, height – 7 meters) with scenes of the battle, and the figure of a woman with a child – a symbol of revival.

On the territory of the complex the visitors are also welcome to drop into National Ethnographic Museum. The complex was designed by the architect Rafael Israelyan.

Echmiadzin

Echmiadzin is the center of the Armenian Church. It is where the Catholicos of All Armenians lives, and the location of the Echmiadzin Cathedral. The word “Echmiadzin” means “The coming of the only-begotten”, and the cathedral was built on the very spot Grigor Lusavorich (St. Gregory the Illuminator) dreamt Jesus Himself descended to from heaven to show him where He wanted the church to be built. Echmiadzin Cathedral is the most ancient Christian temple of Armenia. It was built in 301-303.

 Mother Cathedral of Holy Echmiadzin

According to tradition, the cathedral was built between 301 and 303 near the royal palace in the Armenian capital city of Vagarshapat on the location of a pagan temple. The Kingdom of Armenia became the first country in the world to adopt Christianity as a state religion in 301. Today, Echmiadzin “has a cruciform plan with a central cupola, four free-standing piers, and four projecting apses which are semicircular on the interior and polygonal on the exterior. The central piers, cruciform in section, divide the interior space into nine equal square compartments. In 2000 UNESCO added Echmiadzin Cathedral, the churches of St. Hripsime, St. Gayane, Shoghakat and Zvartnots Cathedral to the list of World Heritage Sites.

St. Gayane Church

St. Gayane church located within walking distance from the Echmiadzin Cathedral of 301. It is a 7th-century church, the religious center of Armenia. St. Gayane was built by Catholicos Ezra I in the year 630. Its design has remained unchanged despite partial renovations of the dome and some ceilings in 1652.

Gayane was the name of an abbess who was martyred with other nuns by King Tiridates III in the year 301, and subsequently made a saint of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

In 2000, Saint Gayane Church was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites along with historical churches of Vagharshapat.
