SHAGHMOSAVANK

Saghmosavank is situated in the east of Saghmosavan village, on the edge of precipitous gorge on the right bank of Qasagh River. It dates back the first half of 13th century. The complex was erected by Vache and Qurd Vachutyans. The complex of Sahgmosavank Monastery includes the Church of Saint Zion, narthex (gavit), repository of manuscripts and Church of Saint Astvatsatsin (Holy Mother).

The main church is St. Zion. It was erected by Vache Vachutyan in 1215. It is of domed hall type building. According to its composition, it is rectangular from outside and cruciform from inside with two-story annexes in four corners. The entrance is on the west. The high cylindrical drum and dome with cone-shaped cover gives a slender appearance to the church.

AMBERD

Amberd was erected in the historical Province of Aragatsotn, presently 7 km north-west from Byurakan village of Ashtarak Region. It is located on the southern slope of Mount Aragats, at the junction point of the Arkashen and Amberd Rivers, on a triangular cape. The exact date of Amberd’s foundation is unknown. Some scholars relate its foundation to the Cyclopean period and the others — to the Uratian and early medieval periods. According to the results of the excavations and historical-archeological researches, the stronghold of Amberd is dated at the X‒XIII cc.

Fortress was concluded from the results of the researches of the ruins of the basalt-built complex, located in the high-positioned place of the town-stronghold.
