HAGHPAT

The monastery founding is traced to the reign of King Abbas Bagratuni in 929-953, but construction of the oldest building of the complex started in 976 during the reign of King Ashot the Merciful (953-977). Construction of St. Nshan church was commissioned by Queen Khosrovanuish in honor of her sons Smbat and Gurgen and was finished in 991. The big narthex is adjacent to St. Nshan Church from the west. The narthex was built in the 10th of the XIII c., in the place of the graveyard founded by Princess Mariam in 1185. The narthex has big volumes and is considered one of the most remarkable constructions of the given architectural shape. It is rich in epigraphs. Haghpat was the religious center of Lori region.  Its most famous 18th century resident was the courtier and troubadour Sayat Nova (1722-1795). Sayat Nova died at Haghbat. Haghpat was placed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1996.

SANAHIN

The Monastery Complex was founded by Armenian King Ashot G. Voghormats in 966 CE. Sanahin got its name after the construction of Haghpat Monastery–meaning (“sa qan zna hin”). The monastery is one of the outstanding works of medieval Armenian architecture. The complex played significant role in spiritual and cultural life of Armenia. The monastery complex consists of religious and civil buildings reconstructed in 10-12th centuries- 3 churches, library-matenadaran, church-porch, fore-church, belfry, mausoleums, halls of religious schools and library. Outside the group of monuments there are located the source of the monastery, chapels, cross stones and a number of small churches with sculptured cross stones which are spread around the district and beyond it, as well as the popular bridge of Sanahin. Saint Astvatsatsin Church is one of the ancient buildings of the complex. After the construction of the church Sanahin became illuminative, scientific-educational center of the clergy of Lori, which had its seminary and matenadaran, then- university and academy.
